Description
A Balwig is a being from the island of Potuk in the land of Eridul. They are entities with chaotic power, capable of space and time travel and shape-shifting into nearly any form. However, they lack full control over their powers and shapes unless bonded to another creature through special agreements.
Annually, all non-bonded Balwigs are transported to a secretive pocket dimension where they must compete to steal an invaluable prize, enabling their escape from Potuk to retire in Azilem. Failure results in their annihilation, with their essence returning to Potuk’s primordial chaotic power for rebirth in an eternal cycle of captivity.
Creatures from distant times and dimensions sometimes find their way to Potuk and are tricked into bonding with a Balwig, who are masters of subterfuge. In exchange for their freedom from Potuk, Balwigs offer to defend their new masters across different planes, dimensions, and temporal existences. The full power of a bonded Balwig is unknown, but famous ones, like Lananna, have been observed as “Shadow Dragons,” piles of broken pottery, or bracelets. They can nullify magic or transport their bonded host across space and time.
Careful consideration is advised when crafting an agreement with a Balwig, as not all deals have positive outcomes.
